genus of mostly solitary pinnate palms from South
America. They tolerate poor soils and are hardy palms
withstanding wind and salt and fierce sun. They
hybridize with themselves and with other genera of palm,
particularly Syagrus. |

| Cultural requirements and other comments:
Very suited to Kona and other areas of Hawaii, these
palms are eye-catching by virtue of their curving leaves
of a grayish blue color that can be quite striking.
Trunks can be 18 inches thick with persistent leaf
bases. The fruit is sweet and edible. |

| Cultural requirements and other comments:
The tallest of the genus with leaves of the same blue
color of B. capitata. A large crown with long
leaves and petioles. Also tolerant of poor soils and hot
dry conditions. |
