| Cultural requirements and other comments: These palms can be
seen growing naturally in open, sunny grasslands. The swollen trunk, free of leaf bases, can grow up to 80 feet, but is usually
seen half that size. This bulky, silvery-gray palm is massive in aspect, with round costapalmate leaves and can be very dramatic
in the landscape. Growth is best in full sun and well-drained soils. It can tolerate drought, but grows faster with consistent
irrigation. This palm is best suited for large landscapes. Bismarckia transplants with some difficulty. Young palms, before
trunk development, are especially intolerant of being moved and should only be transplanted out of containers. Ask us for tips
for a trouble free planting of a containerized Bismarckia. |
