1. C. macrocarpa
Height: up to 40 feet
Size of Crown: 8-10 feet |
| Cultural requirements and other comments: This Palm can be found
at low and high elevation rain forests in New Caledonia. C. macrocarpa shows no preference for any particular soil
type. One of its most attractive features is the red-colored new emerging leaf. The mature leaves are a dark purplish-green. The
leaflets are widely spaced and pointed, giving a dramatic effect. These palms need humus-rich soil that is well irrigated.
Immature palms need some protection from the sun at low or dry areas but do well in the full sun as they mature. C.
macrocarpa can provide an ideal canopy-scape. An interesting feature of C. macrocarpa is that one can
sometimes find a variety called ‘watermelon’ which has a yellowish crownshaft with attractive green speckling. |
