| This genus includes smaller, undergrowth palms coming from eastern Australia and New
Guinea. These palms can be either clumping or solitary with pinnate leaves. They all have a similar draping inflorescence. These
palms need shady conditions with high humidity. |

1. L. monostachya
Height: up to 12 feet
Size of Crown: 3-4 feet |
| Cultural requirements and other comments: This small solitary-trunked
palm from Queensland and New South Wales is sometimes called Walking Stick Palm. Just below the soil, the trunk of this
diminutive palm makes an immediate 90° bend. Thousands of the palms were made into walking sticks during World War II for
wounded soldiers in Australia. The small, pinnate-leaved crown of L. monostachya is very attractive, having a fountain-like
shape with the inflorescence emerging at different areas within the crown. It thrives in shady areas with adequate moisture and
protection from wind or direct sun. This is an excellent small palm for a shady garden or as a potted specimen in a bright
indoor situation. |
