1. S. liukiuensis Japanese Hurricane Palm
Height: up to 60 feet
Size of Crown: 10-12 feet
Cultural requirements and other comments: This palm is endemic to the islands of Ishigaki and Iriomote in the Ryukyu archipelago. Fast growing, able to tolerate full sun at a young age and wind tolerant, this palm shows much commercial promise. The trunk light brown to grey brown trunk shows attractive leaf base scars. The crown of the palm has a similar look to the coconut palm and would make a great coconut substitute as it is self-cleaning and bears small 1/2'” oblong black fruits. S. liukiuensis wants regular water, organics in the soil and full sun when past the juvenile stage and will tolerate coastal planting.
