botanists until the early 1980s. |
|
W. bifurcata (Foxtail Palm)
Height: up to 50 feet
Size of Crown: 18 feet wide |
| Cultural requirements and other comments: The Foxtail Palm has
become very popular in a short amount of time due to the beautiful plumose leaves and fast growth. The trunk has an interesting
swelling that occurs high on the trunk between the base and the crownshaft. Trunks are smooth grey and show attractive and
distinctive rings. Foxtails grow fast in the sun but are slow growing in the shade. The palm is somewhat drought tolerant and
very good in the wind, making it ideal for the hot windy areas in Hawaii. The stately appearance of the Foxtail Palm make it an
excellent substitute for the Royal Palm. Be sure to allow enough room for W. bifurcata when planting. |
